I'm obliged to make a post about Misfits since errybody is loving it and it would almost be a crime against nature/humanity if I didn't have some sort of written documentation to prove I was, in fact, a massive fan like everyone else.
Now, I've just had two cups of tea in a row and that is the equivalent of smoking a point of crystal meth for me.
I only recently got into Misfits. The first season came out in 2009 and in the course of maybe a month or two I crammed in three seasons. I wanted to make it all spaced out and lovely but due to the show's excellence and mostly the risk of socially outcasting myself I watched them in quick succession.
To share my opinions on the whole season would be stale so I'm just going to go over Season 3. To spare anyone who hasn't watched it I'll slip it behind a nice jump...
So, on the whole, when I think of the third season I can generally only think of negative things to say. Firstly, Nathan leaving marked the demise of my life. Sure, his character started off completely misogynistic but you soon started to see that he had all these insecurities and was probably acting out of circumstantial constraints in his life. He sort of started developing as this deep-down, caring dude and he fast became very endearing. Oh, and the irish accent! I could listen to that for years! I wish all my closest friends had that accent - actually, I don't, that would be a surefire way for it to lose it's appeal instantly!
I see that with the introduction of Rudy they were trying to encapsulate that Nathan essence with the sexual lewdness and all, but the thing is, Nathan's whole thing is so unique. Like, he really is truly strange and trying to recapture that is futile. If it was someone like Curtis I think he could be replaced - he's pretty bland. Anyhow, so we come across this Rudy who is a total douche. Total douche. His whole woman as objects thing is just dumb, unimagined and boring/predictable. In conclusion, I would just prefer a show that pushed and challenged the boundaries rather than re-enforce stupid, sexual mistreating notions.
While on that note - the new powers! On the whole I thought they were pretty crappy. I was cheerful that Alisha got something different! Seriously, I love the show but I get very squeamish with the amount of rape culture glorification and such. I have come to learn, though, that the whole nerd/sci-fi/geek/'misfit' sub-culture has white privileges dripping out of it's gunk-filled pores.
(aside) My new lazy man's/apathetic way of looking at these things is that I because I don't perpetuate these silly notions I can watch these shows that are culturally problematic because their messages, or implied or subliminal messages are not going to solidify a bad way of thinking for me. I will also do my darndest to help to spread the message of how pretty much every media has terrible notions ingrained into them - even the radicalist media is still very propaganda-ish and utopianistic! Screw it, basically anything we see or engage in is going to somehow persuade us to think or act in ways that create limitations so I keep that in mind and I just enjoy what is enjoyable and live my life defined by my own beliefs and interests which first and foremost is to do no harm.
Ok, back to Misfits! Since, I went off on a bit of a tangent I might just mix it up a little and dot point my other thoughts!
- The video game episode was the most stressful thing I have ever seen. I think my least favourite character archetype is that incredibly deluded and harmful character. It makes me so INFURIATED maybe because it's the very last thing I can identify with. I call it an archetype like it's a thing but the only time I can think of it being used is Jumanji. (p.s. some person got a tattoo of the Jumanji guy and I can think of no greater hell!)
- The nazi episode. Kind of a cool concept but I think constructed so poorly and unthought out! Honestly, If you go back in time and come face to face with Hitler. I dunno, it makes me think of it as Nazi knowledge 101. Like, If I were writing a story about Nazi Germany and Hitler in Year 8 THAT is what I would write. It's super naive. Additionally, every time they do some sort of time travel it really isn't seamless. FULL OF HOLES! I like me some good mindfuck time travel. Tie up your ends and present me with something convincing, fewls!
- I kind of enjoyed the guy who drew the comics that became reality. I enjoyed the partially homoerotic subtext of Simon being obsessed with the Comic guy for like 2 minutes.
- I think I have a real thing for body switching. I recall this one power rangers episode when I was young that I was ADDICTED to where Kimberly and the Blue One change bodies. Naturally, the Kelly/coma chick body swap was a highlight for me. I actually think Lauren Socha is so incredible because, even though she was herself, I completely believed she wasn't Kelly. I was just about to make a comment about the only downside was that Kelly wasn't really in the episode. ha!
- The zombie episode was really fun although I found the fact that the newest community service worker that shows up is instantly killed very depressingly ironic. The series is laden with deaths but I find it so hard to come to terms with. I hate the constant, flippant deaths!
And the final episode! The big seasonal final-ay! I have mixed feelings towards the general premise of the episode. Some guy's a fake medium, he just brings people 'back from dead' to do their unfinished business so they can crossover or some shit? Ok, I don't have mixed feelings, I think it's shit! Let me re-phrase, the idea is generally pleasant but for the reasons which they feel they need to come back for is shit. The woman who thinks she needs to kill Alisha to get the revenge. Why would you think that? You've lived what? thirty years and you believe your unfinished business is that you need to come back and sleep with some guy and murder his girlfriend! Geez, these people really lived in the moment didn't they! So, then that church girls gets the idea that her sole purpose for coming back is to kill one of the 'Misfits'. DUMB! and so she does and she vanishes into the afterlife as if was her actual destiny. It's the largest amount of shit that has ever been conceptualised to me! Not a thing! ... and as a result ALISHA DEAD! My depression mounts! and then we find out that Simon is going to live his life in a continuous loop so he can be forever with Alisha. Lovely. My depression reaches the summit! So, it makes you ponder - does this mean they won't be coming back?! a couple of google searches later and it appears neither will be returning! I am atop Mt. Depression looking down upon all the woes which are incomparable to this itching ache! But then, I went plummeting down the mountain head first and smashed my face into the gravel pit below when I heard the terrible news about a US remake.
To be honest, I think it may have been a three season phenomenon. They should bury the hatchet and quit while they're (kinda) ahead. Or make a spin-off called 'The Kelly Show' yep, that's my educated suggestion. Until this pipe-dream is a reality we'll just have to wait until some undetermined time in 2012 to see how it will unfurl!
